Chroniquer, Sharp-Thinker, Communicator in Georgia willing to co-Operation BrainStorm
Group of Dutch artists Jeanette Groenendaal, Zoot Derks and Anouk Sluizer, are invited by cultural organization Art Villa Garikula for artistic researches which takes place in the middle of September 2009 in Georgia. We were selected through Dutch organization FCED (foundation of cultural exploration and development) and recommended to Art Villa Garikula for invitation. Art villa garikula is a cultural centre located in Georgias village Garikula, which has earned a good reputation within the contemporary artists, cultural organizations and art communities.
www.garikula.org At this moment, Art Villa Garikula with collaboration of FCED and other foreign organizations is inviting European artists to together find out the realistic possibilities for international professional collaboration between artists; discuss about realisable international cultural projects and support artistic researches. The final aim of Art Villa Garikula, is to found the EU cultural centre in Georgia.
Anouk Sluizer, Jeanette Groenendaal and Zoot Derk are working in the cinematography, visual and performing arts. Being artists of a discipline of vast possibilities and having a long time work experience, we would like to take this new challenge to investigate and widen the area of our creativity and at the same time try to set up an appropriate cooperative terms with our Georgian colleagues in as many aspects as it will be affordable.

This workshop is an "autonomous field exploration", meaning you will get on a bus cruising through the city while you train your camera through your own window of perspective onto the city of Amsteram. Be ready to postpone dinner and venture "off the road" as you learn how to make an experimental video that may become part of an installation exhibited at the end of the workshop. Professional experimental video-makers will be on hand to help you investigate, research and develop your own unique vision. Participants need to have conceptual aspirations while being an independent collaborator and a deadline diehard.

De streng-gelovige bewoners van het dorp Poederoijen in de Bommelerwaard mogen wel uitkijken. Filmmaakster en performance-kunstenares Jeannette Groenendaal is van zins de kerkgangers keurig in pak, vrouwen met hoed en op de dag des Heren blijft thuis de radio uit op zondagmorgen op hun gang naar het huis des heren te verblijden met een weiland vol naakte vrouwen te paard.
Zij vertelde dat deze week in theater De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam, op een avond gewijd aan haar film in wording, Donderpreek, waarin Jeannette herinneringen ophaalt aan haar jeugd in de Bommelerwaard. Als stadskind uit Utrecht zag ze zich plotsklaps in de jaren zestig overgeplaatst naar deze rechtzinnig-reformatorische omgeving, omdat haar ouders, zonder verder acht te slaan op de sociale gevolgen, een welgevallig oog hadden laten vallen op een schattig boerderijtje te Poederoijen.
Van haar schooltijd aldaar, met een onderwijzer die de meisjes uit de klas met een vinger onder hun rokje lastig viel en klasgenootjes die Groenendaal op het schoolplein als kind van de duivel pestten, lijkt de kunstenares nog maar nauwelijks bekomen. 120 uur video heeft ze al gedraaid voor haar film, en er zullen er nog vele volgen, waaronder dus de scne met de naakte amazones. De vrijwilligsters voor die scne zijn overigens al gevonden.
De bezoekers van de avond in De Brakke Grond hadden eigenlijk een vertoning van de film verwacht, maar die hoop bleek ijdel. Groenendaal bleek het publiek naar het theater te hebben genood om, zoals ze zei, als researchgroep te fungeren. Het bleek dus eigenlijk meer een performance te zijn, waarbij Groenendaals partner Zoot op stringente aanwijzingen van de filmmaakster ongemonteerde rushes liet zien op drie schermen, terwijl tegelijkertijd acteurs uit de film liedjes zongen en andere acts ten beste gaven. De meest opmerkelijke daarvan was een demonstratie op eieren lopen. Voor deze act waren vele duizenden eieren uit de Bommelerwaard naar Amsterdam vervoerd. Het ging heel goed, kostte alleen wel veel eieren.
Het publiek bleek, nadat eenmaal aan het licht getreden was dat er nog helemaal geen film bestond, eigenlijk wel gecharmeerd van de gedachte de maakster van een kunstwerk in wording terzijde te kunnen staan met adviezen. Het is altijd aardig als je inspraak lijkt te worden gegund in iets waar je eigenlijk niets mee te maken hebt. Maar dat viel tegen, want de kunstenares leek alle adviezen maar ternauwernood aan te horen. Ook die van haar eigen moeder in de zaal trouwens. Wanneer moeder op een vraag van Jeannette iets te berde bracht, klonk het al vlug een beetje bits: Dat wil ik helemaal niet horen, mam.
Komt de film Donderpreek er ooit echt? De kracht van de avond lag er vermoedelijk in dat elke toeschouwer zich dat bij het aanschouwen van het zeer diffuse materiaal en de talrijke, maar niet altijd even heldere toelichtingen van Groenendaal zich ging afvragen wat de film zou kunnen zijn en onwillekeurig zelf in gedachten aan het monteren sloeg. Misschien komt hij er ook wel echt trouwens, want Groenendaal heeft een aantal jaren geleden met de even ongewone als briljante quasi-documentaire The Dutch Cocaine Factory bewezen een film te kunnen maken. Maar tot die tijd staat ons, kondigde zij aan, nog menig gezellig inspraakavondje te wachten.

Waar in de realiteit van hier en nu de schijn heilig wordt verklaard
Jeanette Groenendaal is naar eigen zeggen performing a filmdirector in de Hollandse Bible Belt. Een gehucht langs de rivier waar zij in de jaren zeventig als zevenjarig Import kind werd aangesproken en gevreesd als vremde buitenlander als stadsen hoer. Op de zwaar gereformeerde lagere school werd door de schoolmeester voor haar voorgebeden; zij was dochter van de Duivel en de klas dreunde hem massaal na.
Wat ziet Jeanette als zij 38 jaar later terugkomt om er een uiterst persoonlijk onderzoek naar het zondebok-mechanisme te filmen? In het dorp ontwikkelt zij een complex performance/filmproject: ze ensceneert het maken van een film op deze beladen locatie door middel van performances, gebaseerd op de bevroren beelden uit haar herinneringen. En daarmee komen ook de herinneringen van de dorpelingen langzaam weer tot leven... een documentaire?
Halverwege het project is een auteurs-filmmaker op een creatief hoogtepunt van mogelijkheden, er is nog geen lineair verhaal op de Timeline gefixeerd. G-net wil op dit moment inhoudelijk reflecteren en het materiaal met publiek delen. Op 9 september breekt G-net in de expozaal van de Brakke Grond een TERRABITE met meer dan 120 uur video film en live performances open.
Maak je klaar voor een expositie; live performances, gesprekken met dramaturgen, filosofen, filmmakers en liefhebbers, een poster verkiezing en diepe publieksinspraak over Kill your darlings, de montage van het ruwe materiaal, etc. Erwin Jans leidt de avond in. G-net zal waardevolle adviezen met naam op de aftiteling vermelden.

Imagining Science is a unique exhibition project built on a series of conversations and collaborations between internationally recognized artists, scientists, bio-ethicists, lawyers and contemporary philosophers. Organized by Professors Tim Caulfield and Sean Caulfield, Canada Research Chairs in the fields of Health Law and Policy, and Printmaking respectively, in conjunction with Catherine Crowston at the Art Gallery of Alberta, the exhibition addresses the impact of the rapidly changing world of genetics, bio-technologies and human engineering, and the many significant breakthroughs, challenges and controversies that have arisen in the last decade with advancements made in new life science technologies: stem cell research, cloning, genetic testing. The works in the exhibition explore the complex and interrelated legal, ethical and social issues associated with advancements made in the life sciences over the past 100 years.

Als kinderen en dronkaards de waarheid spreken, hoe zit het dan met hardcore cocanegebruikers? Hoe zit het met Arend, de hoofdpersoon uit De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek, het documentaire filmdebuut van kunstenares Jeanette Groenendaal (1964)? Wat is wr in haar film? Ze heeft in Arend misschien niet de meest geloofwaardige private eye gekozen om een geweldige complottheorie van alles over alles te ontvouwen. Maar wel eentje die hem in zijn met argwanende bewakingscameras volgehangen huis grandioos aan elkaar kan praten. Van de bouw van de Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek aan de Amsterdamse Schinkelkade, waar van 1900 tot 1950 hoogwaardige coke werd geproduceerd, afkomstig van cocaplanten die op plantages in Nederlands-Indi werden verbouwd (VOC-mentaliteit!) tot en met het hedendaagse drugsbeleid (kunstmatige hooggehouden prijzen!). Het mag dan waanzin zijn, er zit systeem in. Groenendaal daalt af in de Amsterdamse cokewereld, van de Wasteland-parties tot het decadente hedonisme op een feest bij fotograaf Erwin Olaf.

In het 18e tourprogramma presenteert de Filmbank twee nieuwe titels: Jeanette Groenendaals docutective De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek en Kogel Vogel van Federico Campanale. For Your Own Safety is een sensationeel programma over de beperkingen en decadentie van de informatiemaatschappij.

De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek sleept ons mee in het wereldbeeld van een 63-jarige weledelgeboren cocanegebruiker. Hoofdpersoon Arend wordt afgeluisterd en bespied. Hij verdenkt de informatiemaatschappij. Ze houden elkaar nauwlettend in de gaten via internet, telescoop en verrekijker. De film volgt Arend richting 'Solutions', met onderweg een poging om een oud Nederlands bedrijf nieuw leven in te blazen: de Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek (tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Nederland de grootste producent van kwaliteitscocane). Ook is er een feest bij Erwin Olaf, waar decadent uitgedoste gasten zich te goed doen aan coke. De kracht van de beelden, de structuur van de film en de onwaarschijnlijkheid van de gebeurtenissen doen denken aan fictie. Maar het documentairedebuut van performancekunstenaars Jeanette Groenendaal vertelt de waarheid en niets dan de waarheid.
Jeanette Groenendaal (1964) studeerde aan DasArts (Advanced Research in Dance and Theatre Studies) in Amsterdam. Samen met partner Zoot Derks vormt ze het kunstenaarsduo ZootenGenant. Naast performance maken multimedia installaties, nieuwe media en film deel uit van hun activiteiten. De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek is Groenendaals documentairedebuut.

volgehangen huis grandioos aan elkaar kan praten. Van de bouw van de
Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek aan de Amsterdamse Schinkelkade, waar van 1900
tot 1950 hoogwaardige coke werd geproduceerd, afkomstig van cocaplanten die
op plantages in Nederlands-Indi werden verbouwd (VOC-mentaliteit!) tot en
met het hedendaagse drugsbeleid (kunstmatige hooggehouden prijzen!). Het mag
dan waanzin zijn, er zit systeem in.
Groenendaal daalt af in de Amsterdamse cokewereld, van de Wasteland-parties
tot het decadente hedonisme op een feest bij fotograaf Erwin Olaf. Haar film
toert langs de Nederlandse filmtheaters in het kader van de 18de
Filmbank-tour 'For your own safety', voorafgegaan door Kogel Vogel van
Federico Campanale. Hij vliedt als een roes voorbij: blikvernauwend en
bewustzijnsverruimend.

Vanavond in 'Andere tijden': Hoe de Nederlandse cocaneplantages op Java een fortuin opleverden voor de Koloniale Bank en er hele cocanefabrieken in Amsterdam ontstonden...
Vijfduizend jaar geleden werd al coca gebruikt in Peru en Ecuador. Door op de bladeren van de cocaplant te kauwen werd de werkzame stof onttrokken, die oppepte en hielp tegen hoogteziekte. In Europa was de cocaplant tot aan de negentiende eeuw nog geen succes, omdat de bladeren hun magische werking verloren tijdens de overtocht. Toen men er in slaagde om bestanddelen uit het cocablad te isoleren, werd cocane een populair middel in het Westen. Rond 1880 stuurde Sigmund Freud een halve gram cocane met gebruiksaanwijzing naar zijn verloofde: "Verdeel dit in acht porties. Dan blijf je sterk en je krijgt er mooie rooie wangetjes van." Nederland verdiende ook goed aan de handel in cocane. In 1900 werd in Amsterdam op de Schinkelkade de Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek (NCF) opgericht. Cocaplanten werden door het koloniale Nederland verbouwd op plantages in Indi. De VOC-mentaliteit! Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog had de fabriek toptijden - vele soldaten voerden veldslagen uit met een flinke dosis coke achter de kiezen. En de NCF groeide uit tot grootste cokefabriek ter wereld.

Dat waren nog eens tijden. Terug naar de onze. Want daar is het allemaal zo eenduidig niet meer. Kende u dit verhaal bijvoorbeeld? Nee? En wat is daarvan de reden denkt u? Precies. We worden gestuurd, in de gaten gehouden. Arend weet het zeker. Hij is de meest onwaarschijnlijke hoofdrolspeler die u ooit zal tegenkomen. Als Jeanette Groenendaals De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek begint, zit je de eerste vijf minuten met je ogen te knipperen. What the? Is dit echt? Pro Paranoia Pictures. Duidelijk een film van deze tijd. En wat voor een! Arend is een restproduct uit de gouden tijd van de cocane, toen alles nog puur en onversneden was. En voor de rest het Internet afstruint om in de gaten te houden wie ons allemaal in de gaten houdt. Internet en crack, een paranode makende combinatie. Alles hangt met alles samen! Kijk maar, hier op deze website zeggen ze het: Nederland is het meest afluisterende land ter wereld, iedereen wordt hier preventief gebugged om, wanneer de tijd rijp is, toe te slaan. Want de belangen zijn nu eenmaal te groot. Al die zeecontainers in Rotterdam, iemand moet er geld aan verdienen. En dacht u nu werkelijk dat de staat alleen repressief optreedt?
Voor uw eigen veiligheid kunt u maar beter goed naar Arend luisteren, ook al is-ie wat moeilijk te verstaan. Want een beetje meer paranoia kan geen kwaad in de tijd dat iedereen te pas en te onpas zichzelf laten registreren en volgen, als gedwee bijen in een korf. Begin dan ook maar met het kijken naar deze film, waarvan ik nog niet eens een fractie van heb verteld, en de paranoia komt vanzelf op je af, onvermijdelijk als een kogel door een glasplaat, zoals het hallucinerende zes minuten durende KogelVogel van Federico Campanale ervoor al had laten zien. Stofwolken van verwarring achterlatend.

DEN BOSCH - "Op een dag rijd ik door rood op de fiets in Amsterdam. Een politiewagen komt aanscheuren. Ik ga aan de kant om ruimte te maken. Maar de auto stopt, er springen drie agenten uit en die arresteren me. Drie uur in een cel gezeten. Voor rood licht." En toen dacht kunstenares Jeanette Groenendaal: wat is hier aan de hand, heeft Arend dan toch gelijk? Is iedereen verdachte, zijn we een politiestaat aan het worden?
Arend is een vriend van Groenendaal, ervan overtuigd dat de toeristen aan de overkant van zijn woonboot undercover agenten zijn. Dat duikers hem in de gaten houden, net als een overvliegende helikopter.
Als Arend vlak na het 'roodlicht-incident' wordt opgepakt, blijkt dat hij al maanden wordt afgeluisterd. Groenendaal: "Wat hij altijd al dacht, bleek de waarheid. Hij wrd afgeluisterd. En iedereen met wie hij belde dus ook. Ik heb hele gesprekken van mezelf teruggelezen, die ik negen maanden eerder met hem had gehad. Je kunt denken: ik heb niks te verbergen. Maar er stonden fouten in. Die op papier staan als de waarheid. Het is de omkering van het strafrecht. De politie zoekt een dader van een delict dat nog niet bekend is. Als je maar lang genoeg zoekt, vindt je bij iedereen wel iets."
Performencekunstenares Jeanette Groenendaal (1964) is in die periode bezig met een afstudeerfilm voor DasArts met in de hoofdrol Indiase tempels, maar besluit van onderwerp te veranderen. Getriggerd door de aanhouding van Arend (hij blijkt achteraf onschuldig), start ze een zoektocht door de Nederlandse cocanewereld. Die resulteert in 2007 in haar debuut, de veelgeprezen 'pro-paranoia docutective' De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek. Een verwijzing naar de BV Nederland, in de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw de grootste cocane-producent van de Wereld.
Het is een duizelingwekkende tocht door de waarheid, zonder die te willen vinden. Langs de 16 bewakingscamera's in de woning van Arend die zowel een overval als zijn arrestatie registreren. Langs een advocaat die de Nederlandse afluisterpraktijken uiteenzet, via een wetenschapper naar beelden uit het Amsterdamse hedonistische nachtleven en een kerk, waar op de achterste rij Colombiaanse drugsbazen zaken doen en grote donaties aan de kerk schenken. Tot aan Arend, die zich onderdompelt in een afkickkliniek.
Groenendaal werd geboren in Utrecht. Jarenlang woonde ze in Poederoijen, ze heeft plannen om daar haar volgende film te gaan maken. Maar haar debuutfilm moet vooral niet gezien worden als een klassiek 'provinciemeisje-meets-de-grote-stad' verhaal. "Nee man, ik heb 15 jaar in het buitenland gewoond. Het gaat erom: Life is a stage, iedereen speelt zijn rol."
En dat leidt, hoe dan ook, tot verschillende interpretaties van de waarheid. In de film alleen al die van de advocaat, de gebruiker, de wetenschapper. En dan is er nog de waarheid die het publiek zich vormt. Groenendaal: "Ik had tachtig uur materiaal, daarmee had ik een hele andere film kunnen maken. Als ik Peter R. de Vries was geweest, had ik geprobeerd het publiek te sturen, De Waarheid te vinden. Maar zo een-dimensionaal zit de wereld niet in elkaar."
Dus blijft de kijker na De Nederlandse Cocane Fabriek verward achter. Geloof niets en alles aan de beelden. Zelfs de overval, vastgelegd door de bewakingscamera's, kan in scene gezet zijn, al is dat niet gebeurd. " Het gaat over het grensgebied van waarheid en waanzin. Over de oneindige complexheid van de wereld die niet in ons rechtssysteem past. Want dat kent alleen goed of fout."

At the heart of Jeanette Groenendaals Dutch Cocaine Factory resides Arend ter Horst, a 63-year-old cocaine addict who betrays all the signs of acute paranoia. It becomes very clear early on in the film that this paranoia is far from misplaced.
I was shocked to read [transcripts of] the telephone calls that I had made to Arend, explains Groenendaal. I always thought fear of telephone taps was just paranoid, and that I had nothing to hide, but when I read back everything, that was when I decided to make this film.
So Groenendaal commences a documentary journey with Arend that reveals the terrifying degree of surveillance or digital chasing, as a Dutch lawyer refers to it that takes place within the Netherlands. I took my camera along because I wanted to find out what was going on; what was right and wrong. And was I a suspect as well?
En route, she tells the story of the original Dutch cocaine factory which, in the 1920s, imported up to 2 million pounds (900 tons) of cocoa leaves per year to fire an extremely profitable and perfectly legal industry. Cocaine wine was delivered to the Pope and the American president, who commented on the excellent mood it created. Eventually the US, unable to break into the lucrative cocaine trade, introduced a prohibition whose global influence became endemic.
The character of Arend fills the film. The CCTV footage of the police raid on his house at the beginning is genuinely shocking. Later in the film, he calls cut!; an instruction taken on board in a filmic sense by Groenendaal, until she realises that its the cocaine that he wants cut, not the camera. The footage of his withdrawal from its use is disturbing, but he reveals a deliciously dry humour when assessing the substitute substances deployed to bulk out the coke. Its no longer the real thing, he observes.
I think he is a visionary, comments Groenendaal. In India, a person on the edge of society who has been using drugs for forty years would be a holy man. In our past in Holland, we have given space to these people to grow and experiment. Now, within this new, controlled society, we are suddenly criminalising them.

I first met the enigmatic artist-couple Zoot and Genant in the Summer of 2000. We talked for a while about their performances with the collective Artporn and their later work as a duo. They explained a Taoist sex ritual to me, and told me how they performed this ritual outdoors and indoors while visiting Tokyo. They decided to fuck a number of times each day for a number of days, without coming to climax/ejaculation, and registering how the energy between them and around them slowly transformed.
Zoot and Genant are an archetypal Dutch couple radiating the best of hippie culture, media activism and advanced technological networking in underground scenes. As good Dutch citizens, they interfere in global media debates with sexually avanced thinking and a harsh critique of consumerist sex and drugs industries. If you think of them as exhibitionists, they will tell you that they are actants to your own voyeuristic needs. The amount of effort they put into breaking down normative ideas and emotions about sex and porn is enormous. A uniquely burlesque quality enters their work, as their sexual-artistic gestures take unusually dreamy and raw forms. Performance modes are invented from the bottom up in clever concepts and physically daring actions such as the Oysterbarpiece (1995) or the Anal Restaurant (1996). In this last performance, a performer is tied onto a rotating platform his/her bottom stuffed with mashed potatoes, excremental mixture flying all over the gallery when the platform is brought to a halt. Zoot and Genant create fresh erotic energy in response to selected sites and audiences, who are sometimes heightened and sometimes half paralyzed. Energy circulates freely between performers and audiences, creating joy and havoc.
In Oysterbarpiece (1996), performed in several cities in the Netherlands, Genet asked members of the collective and the audience to suck oysters from between her legs. In the summer of 2002 ZootenGenant made a name for themselves by their legendary
streaming internet performance '8x8x72 Fucking Retreat', a meditation on the globalisation of
intercourse, in De Praktijk.
Their performance consisted of 8 days, 8 times a day, 72 thrusts without an ejaculation.
The gallery website went out flat by the enormous amount of visitors.
For the inhabitants of Easter Island, who happened to have free access to the internet, '8x8x72
