Armed Confrontations MAIN SUBJECTS.
Since the very early stages of CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations, the subject has been handled from all different angles. Geopolitics is of course one of the most prominent aspects of this conference. In addition to this, the economics of Armed Confrontations are also highly profiled. The same goes for some more specific areas such as: Human Rights and the Civilian Population during Armed Confrontations, terrorism, tactical use of weapons of mass destruction, nuclear and chemical weapons, ethnic cleansing, refugees, children warriors, etc. Other areas covered during the conference includes: the development and escalation of Armed Confrontations, peace keeping operations, diplomatic options, the role of the media in Armed Confrontations, peace keeping operations, etc.

Access to low end communication technology during the past half decade has revolutionized the way in which ordinary citizens can take part in social, political and economical debates. E-mail, moderated news groups, electronic town halls, etc. are some of the tools available, and used by individuals and entire communities that want to play an active role in the social, political and economical developments taking place in their surroundings.
In CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations, Marroquin makes use of this same technical infrastructure to intensify his search for the role of the artist in an information society.

-THE CONFERENCE INPUT
Information Gathering and Communications.
Radio, Television and On Line Services.
Radio and television are permanently present in the gallery during the conference. Receivers are tunned to national and international radio stations: BBC World Service, Radio Netherlands, American Forces Radio and other networks that give a general view of the situation.
As far as television is concerned, special attention is given to A2000 (Amsterdam cable operator) and its 25 channels package. To complement this package, several satellite dishes are installed the gallery roof to have access to stations that are not included in A2000 package, as well as, unedited footage sent by correspondents to the major networks from areas of conflict. Wire services and on-line services from newspapers, networks and news services are also available sources of information during the conference.

-MODERATED NEWS GROUPS
Moderated news groups are already operating for the development of the conference.
All the information generated by these news groups is been assembled in one final document that forms part of 's main data base.
Some of these groups continue to operate throughout the conference.

THE READING TABLE
News papers clips, magazines, news letters and special reports on subjects regarding Armed Confrontations are available for participants and visitors at the reading table. Printed material is mixed with on-line services via computers, with preset bookmarkers, of sites that can supply relevant information.

-OUTLETS OF THE CONFERENCE
Next to the possibility of attending personaly to Armed Confrontations, all events are photographed and recorded in audio and video. Daily summaries are assembled, broadcasted and cable casted via Salto radio and television, the same goes for the daily publication on the teletext pages allocated to De Hoeksteen Live! Radio and De Hoeksteen Live! Television via Salto.
High-lights of events at the gallery and around the world are transmited to Salto via ISDN and cablecasted live on a daily basis.
The October 18th. cablecasting of De Hoeksteen Live! Television will be dedicated to CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations, It will preview discussions, presentations, interviews, etc. live at the Salto Studios and via IRC and ISD video conferencing.


IN HOUSE AUDIO AND VIDEO CHANNELS.
CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations has its own audio & video in house channels during the conference. They operate on a permanent basis combining material received via radio, television, the conference's own satelite uplink and with events taking place within the premises.
Live and real time footage is combined with computer generated information: " CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations News" is an electronic publication generated with computers. It features texts, quotes, scans of photographs, charts, graphics, digitized footage and animations, etc. that are put together as events develop.
The final version of the in house audio and video channels are also issued as show reels and available from the gallery after the conference.

DTP and Armed Confrontations.
Since the very early pre-production stages of CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations, DTP (desk top publishing) has been considered one of the important tools for internal communications, as well as, an important part of the outlet of the conference.
The on-line publication via internet and " CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations News" are works in progress that are continuously changing and updated. So they need to be structured in a simple and agile infrastucture where DTP plays a very important role.
Another very interesting aspect of DTP with in the context of Armed Confrontations is hardcopy> Cuntume made, printed versions of the on-line magazine, " CHAPTER I Armed Confrontations News" and digests of the conference, are issued in hard copy and CD Rom upon request. Each published issue is different from the next.
A daily digest of CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations is published and available for participants.
A final version of the on-line magazine with transcripts of the discussions, statements, commentaries etc. as well as visual material: photographs, maps, charts, illustrations etc. is printed and relalesed on Sunday October 27th. the last day of Armed Confrontations.

  • THE TEAM(s)

  • Two main teams have been put together for the development of CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations.
    One team is a production team encharged of putting the event together and inplementing it in terms of the conference and all of its different outlets. Most of the members of this team are individuals working with Raul Marroquin in De Hoeksteen Live! (Radio & Television) as well as De Hoeksteen Net. Other participants have worked with Marroquin in previous projects. In addition to this, there is, an editorial team that concentrates on the content of the conference and the selection of guests and participants.
    The editorial team includes: politicians, academics, journalists, military personel, peace activists, diplomats, enviromentalists, security experts, representatives of the weapon industry, etc.
    Marroquin's main goal when puting together the editorial team was to include as many different parties as possible that have some interest on the subject of Armed Confrontations, so that all areas are represented.
    Most of the members of editorial team are also part of other teams, i.e. on-line journal editorial team, in-house audio and video channels, CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations News, etc.
