INTRODUCTION:
From 20 October through 27 October 1996 Galerie Aschenbach will host media artist, Raul Marroquin's CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations, the first in series of events dealing with current issues of global concern.

CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations will integrate the gallery space into the ongoing global dialogue concerning Armed Confrontations. This will occur in the same way debates take place in areas of society that participate in the decision making process of their communities.

Since 1971, Raul Marroquin has been living in the Netherlands and working as a media artist. His work includes: live events, radio, television, teleconferencingand "many to many" communications. During the past ten years R. Marroquin has used consumer and office technology to produce and program radio and television. His television program De Hoeksteen Live! (cablecasted live for the Amsterdam metropolitan area, every third Saturday of the month, twelve to fourteen consecutive hours) features interviews, debates and discussions on current affairs, culture, politics, economics and social issues with local, national and international artists, politicians, journalists, academics, activists, captains of industry, etc. Some of the items cablecasted during De Hoeksteen Live! Television are live in the studio, some others are conducted via the telephone, BBS (Bulleting Board System) IRC (Internet Relay Chat) moderated news groups and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) teleconferencing. In CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations, Marroquin uses some of the same technology and formulas developed in De Hoeksteen Live! Television. Now, this new approach will be inplemented outside the live, television framework of Marroquin's cable program.

Armed Confrontations.
Sunday, 18 October through Sunday 27th.1996.
Armed Confrontations and its influence on politics, economics, the environment, etc. will be the subject of discussion in CHAPTER I: Armed Confrontations. During this period Armed Confrontations all over the world are monitored, discussed and evaluated by experts from governments and NGO's (non-governmental organizations) representatives from different corners of the private sector, autonomous organizations, special intrest groups, activists, academics, journalists and concerned citizens on a 24 hour basis.
More than trying to find solutions to these problems, 's main target with Armed Confrontations is to open a dialogue outside the conventional environment where such issues are normally ventilated. The intimate atmosphere of the gallery will encourage casual exchanges.

-WHAT IS CHAPTER I

CHAPTER I is a one week event designed to debate matters regarding Armed Confrontations.

CHAPTER I looks at elements that are part of the complex configuration of Armed Confrontations and asks for a serious attempt to promptly deal with the issue.
Access to all available information on the subject for the guests, participants as well as visitors, is a main target of the project.

CHAPTER I deals with subjects regarding Armed Confrantations in an extensive way, making a first priority the participants direct and inmediate contact.

The project operates from a simple, flexible structure divised to deal with developments rapidly and efficiently.

CHAPTER I is the first in a series of conceptual exercises, that allows those involved to operate under simillar circumstances to those of a news desk, or a war room. The location is equiped with the necessarymeans for immediate access to up-to-the-minute information.

CHAPTER I will enable participants to exchange ideas on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups: round tables, lectures, workshops, presentations, etc.
Encounters and discussions take place as live events, via the telephone, moderated news groups, IRC and Internet exchanges of text and image based information. ISDN video conferencing is an integral part of the communications network. All of this, underlines the innovative infrastructure of the conference and reinforces the international scope of this event.

CHAPTER I can be considered as a communications laboratory at the disposal of participants, visitors and observers. It is also a pilot for a formula that can be used in the future on a more permanent basis.
Not all events are open to the public, some of them will take place behind closed doors. Summaries and audio & video recordings will be available from the 's archives. Information is also available via s own on-line services, in house audio & video channels, as well as radio & television produced for Salto (Amsterdam local radio and cable television.)
