About Croatian Wine by:
Ronald Anthonius Gerl
In the fifth century b.c. the grape was introduced to the coastal regions in nowadays Croatia. Greek settlers brought there knowledge and domestic grape varieties into current Istria and Dalmatia. Eversince we saw a slow but gradual migration land inwards. The romans contributed fairly to the transportation of the vine into slavonia and zagorije regions. Roman writers in the already estimated the wines in the coastal regions highly.
Nowadays Croatia offers a wide variety of wines. Inland we find a diversity of wines, prepared in a alsace manner (continental climat) and on the coast we find the warm and robust dalmatian wines which can best be compared to high quality italian reds.
Though recently independent, the republic of croatia has a longstanding tradition. Croats maintained themselves in these parts of europe for over 1400 years, dedacating themselves to amongst others wines...
