chladni plates are sonic mandalas, pictures of sonic frequencies made by pumping pure tones through metal plates with sand or salt placed on them. the grains are forced away from the vibrating portions of the plates to form the patterns seen here. different frequencies create different patterns. the same effect can be achieved by bowing metal or glass plates with a violin bow. |
