Acoustic-Geographic Surveys
a sound-art project of
MNORTHAM
A series of audio documents examining acoustic qualities of specific geographic locations using found materials, organic patterns and naturally occurring acoustic elements. Each survey will follow specific themes based on either geometric patterns describing points of geography, places of particular geologic characteristics, or historical locations. At these places acoustic materials will be gathered. This process of gathering will include one or a combination of: documenting natural existing sound elements (i.e. field recordings), on location performances (i.e. improvised work using found materials and natural acoustics only), on-site installations (i.e. making site specific long wire installations, or other acoustic sound devices that uniquely interacts with the natural space, i.e. is played by wind, grass, trees, or water). These materials are then compiled and recomposed using straight editing and mixing to create a synapses of the survey. No additional electronic processing or added effect will be used.
- 100 mile radius : Seattle, WA
The first of this series is a abstract portrait of the US Pacific Northwest depicting the raw contrasts of acoustic material from four locations 100 miles North, South, East, West from Seattle, WA; and a central fifth location. At each place I made a series of on-site performances using found materials and existing sounds. This material was later recomposed into documents painting abstract landscapes of each of the five locations.
Future surveys will include:
- Balsatic flood plains - on location performances and installations in lava beds of the US west including recordings from Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico
- Swiss Alps - performances with found objects in various locations in the Alps
- Roman ruins - performances with found objects in and around Rome
- 100 mile radius : Austin, TX - acoustic portrait of the landscape of central Texas
- Marfa Flats & Big Bend - installations and performances in remote areas of Southwest Texas.
